Software Engineer with a passion for learning Japanese, the outdoors, and video games. Developed applications for Android, Visual Studio Tools for Office, and Unity, with prior work experience in investment banking, and a Japanese junior high school where over three years I achieved business level fluency in Japanese. Currently developing an iOS and Android app called Think!Think! for Hanamaru Lab, an educational venture based in Tokyo.
I gained a place on the highly-competitive and internationally recognised JET Programme as an assistant language teacher to facilitate the English language education of junior high school children aged 12 to 15, as well as to contribute to the global cultural understanding of my school and local community. My key duties were:- Learning how to teach and communicate effectively in a foreign language Developing teaching materials, utilising software engineering skills to develop classroom games and presentations Studying towards level N2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test this July
From June 2014 to June 2015 I was appointed as a Regional Advisor by the regional government, delivering frontline support to foreign residents in Yamagata’s most populous area.
In June 2015 I was elected to be an Executive Officer of AJET, a volunteer organisation which facilitates grassroots internationalisation and networking between its constituent members throughout the prefecture.
I successfully gained a place on Goldman Sachs’ One Year Placement Program in order to acquire industrial experience in the field and satisfy the applied fieldwork component of my Software Engineering degree. I worked in Banking Technology for one year, providing technical support for investment bankers by developing add-in tools for Microsoft Office. My key achievements as an Intern at Goldman Sachs were: Converting legacy VBA macros to reliable, maintainable C# code. Working with bankers to develop new solutions to increase their productivity. Our biggest accomplishment was a tool to convert old pitchbooks produced in Word to Powerpoint. A single pitchbook would take one day to be converted manually, and can now be converted in a number of minutes. Attending ‘Tech Talks’ where I had the opportunity to learn from senior developers and external speakers, including Scala’s Martin Odersky.
Over five years I studied Software Engineering at an undergraduate level with a particular focus on object oriented development in Java, along with modules in functional programming with Haskell. In addition to my studies, I was elected as the course’s year group representative for three consecutive years, helping peers and raising issues at monthly departmental Staff Student Committee meetings.
For my undergraduate project I applied my studies in Java development, and own interest in music and fitness to build an original fitness application for Android called “BeatClearWalker”. Designed to improve fitness when walking, the application calculates the user’s cadence and uses audio effects to prompt the user to walk at a healthy pace while listening to their own music through the application’s built-in music player.
